Graduating Senior Thoughts: Kara Carr

Kara Carr is graduating with a degree in Nursing and Full University Honors.

“Wow—what a ride it’s been! Late nights, endless papers, and group projects that tested our patience. We’ve truly earned every moment of this. There were times we wondered if we’d make it, if it was worth it, or if we made the right choice. We did it in the NIU Honors Program, a community of driven, passionate, and hardworking students who refused to settle for average, we aimed higher, and we succeeded. Each of us chose this path, not because we had to, but because we wanted more. We wanted to challenge ourselves, dig deeper, and take on more opportunities to prove ourselves. The Honors Program pushed us to think critically, explore beyond the surface, and develop a mindset that strives for excellence. And now, as we prepare for the next chapter, we know it was all worth it. One of the most important lessons we’ve learned is that learning doesn’t stop when we walk across the stage on May 10th.

The drive to keep growing, to seek out new knowledge, and to continue challenging ourselves will stay with us forever. For me, as a nursing major, this program gave me the chance to explore my passion for women’s and children’s health in ways I never imagined. Through research and hands-on experiences, I’ve gained more knowledge that will shape my future as a NICU nurse. But no matter our majors, each of us turned curiosity into action, interests into expertise, and goals into reality. The Honors Program isn’t just about academics, it’s about shaping us into leaders, ready to make an impact. This is something I’m particularly grateful for, as it prepared me for a future where leadership and commitment are very important.

Of course, none of us did this alone. We had professors who challenged and inspired us, friends who made sure we took breaks when we needed them, and families who stood by us through thick and thin. I have to give a special thank you to my best friend, Haylee Schultz. We’ve spent the past four years side by side, completing every challenge together. She constantly pushed me to do more and to believe in myself, and I’ll be forever grateful for her friendship. To my family, thank you for your unwavering support through every high and low over the last four years. I am blessed to have you in my corner. And to my boyfriend, Evan, thank you for being my rock, for always building up my confidence, especially during the toughest times in nursing school and the Honors Program. You’ve been there through it all, and I couldn’t have made it without you.

So, what’s next? Whatever it is, I know we’re ready. We’ve proven we can take on challenges, push through obstacles, and come out stronger. Let’s carry that same drive forward, knowing this is just the beginning.

Congratulations, NIU Honors Class of 2025! We made it, and the best is yet to come.”
